Terrific work Ivan. I am currently using IMPASize as a backup utility for the mail stored on my own IMAP server. Great!
I am using Thunderbird, and the incremental nature of the backups does not appear to work in the way I anticipated. If I do two sequential backups, they take the same amount of time, but do NOT duplicate entries in the backup destination. I imagined that the second backup would scoot through the process much faster as no data needed to be transferred.
Does that make sense?
Many thanks

Thanks Mark,
When you say "your own IMAP server" are you talking about a local server?
This could explain why you're seeing similar durations of backups. Basically, a certain amount of time is required to get the message ids of all messages in the folder on the server. On local servers this time could be greater than downloading quite a large message since it requires multiple small requests/replies from the server (versus a single big reply for getting the whole message - this is prety quick locally).
This effect should not be so visible when backing up folders from a remote server. Let me know if your experience differs and we can investigate further. In any case, if a message exists locally, it will not be downloaded again, so you can rest assured that your bandwidth is consumed with care
If you need to check what's happening in the background, you can set the logging of IMAP traffic to "Detailed" (Options/Logging) and have a glimpse at the imapsize.log file for more details. |
