|
|
Hello all.
I'll not get into my problems with Thunderbird, other than to say I'm very frustrated.
It has been a week and no help or response from Thunderbird Forums, so I need to get back to Outlook.
The reason is that all of a sudden half my Thunderbird email folders just stopped showing up. I was not doing any System or Mozilla work. I can still see the folders with WinExplorer. I can't seem to get them to show up in ThunderBird. I have tried creating and copying to a new profile. I have done a lot of forum searching and reading. Still nothing.
So ...
I need to convert back to Outlook. Badly!
Pardon my ignorance, but I am learning ...
My Account in Thunderbird says I have a POP Mail Server.
Would someone briefly explain the email formats?
I believe Thunderbird is IMAP. What is Outlook (and Outlook Express)?
What is POP3?
And what is mbox and eml, both of which are in Tools of IMAPSize?
Is IMAPSize a program that I can use to grab the files in 'MAIL' folder of Thunderbird and convert to Outlook (or possibly Outlook Express)?
Is that what I would do, select one of the two (eml2mbox or mbox2eml) to create my conversion? I tried that, and it won't point to any of my email files in Thunderbird (which consists of two files each, one extension is just FILE, the second is MSF).
Or will this program not do what I need it to do?
If someone knows some previous forum dialog that might help me, I would sure appreciate them pointing it out to me..
I someone wants to work with me offline, I'll condense the dialogue and post to the forum after we fix (hopefully)!
Sorry for all the questions, but I am really up against a wall.
Thanks in advance for any help. _________________ Thanks, Bob

IMAPSize should be able to do the work for you. Check instructions on this page carefully, specially points 2 (Locate mbox files in Thunderbird) and 3 (Convert mbox files to eml files) and the part which says "you might need to set the "Files of type" option to "All Files" in the file selection dialog, since Thunderbird mbox files don't have an extension".
Let me know if that doesn't help. |

What page are we talking about?
The Home Page? FAQ? Forum?
I am looking for the points 2 and 3 that you are talking about.
If you have the link ...
I'm getting so frustrated that I'm not functioning properly.
Need to go for a walk and come back later and try again ... _________________ Thanks, Bob

The conversion is working fine.
I just did a few folders and I wanted to test the transfer to OE and then Outlook.
I am not that familiar with where the files are in Outlook Express.
I installed OutLook Express 6.
I can't find the files anywhere (Inbox, etc.) I even created a test folder, but can't find it in a search.
Could you elaborate on where I should be dragging the files in Win Explorer.
I have looked in PGM Files, AppData. Not sure of this ...

I finally found the folder where the files are ...
Buried!
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{BA699AB4-8C45-4C11-B31D-12FE273F2C51}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
I had to go to Microsoft knowledge base to poke around to find it.
However, the Outlook Express folder (Inbox, Outbox, etc.) are a bunch of .dbx files.
Are you saying to drag the generated .eml file to this folder?
If I do this, what do I have to do to get OE to recognize?
Or will it do it automatically?
I'm guessing not, but what do I know! _________________ Thanks, Bob

No, IMAPSize doesn't do anything with dbx files.
When you were converting files with mbox2eml you specified a folder where eml files should be stored. Open that folder in Windows Explorer. Also open Outlook Express. Start dragging eml files from Windows Explorer to folders in Outlook Express. You can drag multiple files at once. |

OK, here is the latest.
I now understand the drag from WinExplorer to OE.
I set up two smaller windows and gave it a try.
It seemed to work as I dragged the mouse. I get the 'NOT' sign as I crossed windows, but as soon as I got to the folder I wanted to drop it into, I get the cursor and a little square box with a plus sign.
When I release the mouse, I get the Outlook message noted below.
Has anyone tried this process and got that message?
I have verified that the files are there. I can see them with WinExplorer.
I have rebooted and shut down all other applications.
Shut down virus stuff. Shut down Ad-Watch.
I have TaskManager up and verified processes running.
Only thing running is FireFox (to do this forum), TaskManager, OutlookExpress, WinExplorer, and MSNMessenger which starts up whenever I start up OutlookExpress. Can't shut it down without shutting down OE. I doubt that is the issue here.
I guess I have explained all I can about this for now.
I hope you can give me some suggestions.
If you need any info, just let me know.
I see the process CSRSS.exe running from time to time. Not sure what that is, but as I understand it, it is NOT spyware, but something to do with Window's indexing.
I guess I have told you all I can for now.
I hope you can give me some suggestions.
Thanks again for your patience and help ...

The file d:\TBird Conversion\Home could not opened because it does not exist, or it is being used by another application.
An error has occurred. (onliy button is OK)

I tried a few more things.
I was wondering if I could open the file in some sort of editor, such as NoteTab Pro, or WordPad, and I can.
I figured, if all else fails, I could copy the critical info that I needed and save it.
I then thought I would try to use OE to look at the converted .eml files.
I CAN open the .eml files with OE. I can then move to any folder with in OE.
This tells me that the files were converted properly and are there.
There must be something about OE and the drag and drop method.
This process would work, but would be very time consuming, but would do it if there is not other options.
One other thing.
Does IMAPSize do anything for the address book?
I need to figure out how to get that from Thunderbird to OE.
I'm out of here for the day.
Check in tonight.
Have a good day! _________________ Thanks, Bob

| You have to drag eml files, not the folder. So, from the right pane in Windows Explorer select all the messages in the folder (CTRL+A) and drag them over to the OE folder. |

Yes indeed, that works.
Dragging the files works.
You might add 'drag the files, not the folders, stupid!' to your FAQ pages.
Thank you so much.
Next task will be address book, mab to wab.
I'll have to do some research on how that might happen.
Any thoughts on that?
Once again, thanks.
I liked Thunderbird, but maybe it will be more stable in a year ... _________________ Thanks, Bob
